SA VA was launched in 2009 through a flagship store, design studio and garment center in the Rittenhouse Square neighborhood of Philadelphia. Sarah envisioned the store to be an urban version of a serene Moroccan courtyard epitomizing the brands aesthetic by balancing understated sophistication with a hint of edge. Sarah, educated as an artist, draws inspiration from contemporary art, travel, music, and the SA VA women she designs for. Too, Sarah is passionate about the company’s mission to be the most socially sustainable apparel company in the country. Having manufactured in Bangladesh in her early career and seeing the impact of the global economic crisis, Sarah envisioned SA VA to be a new kind of apparel company that considers how and by whom things were made, and what they were made with. Her intention can be seen through the company’s commitment to local job creation and reduction of carbon footprint by manufacturing locally, responsibly sourced textiles as well as through partnerships with organizations that help women.

SA VA and Sarah Van Aken have received numerous awards including Apparel Magazine “Top Innovator 2012”, “Philadelphia’s Smartest People Award” by Philadelphia Magazine, the Women’s Opportunity Resource Center’s “Community Impact Award” and “Entrepreneur of the Year” by the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce.
